We are sorry to inform you that at the end of March 2026 the social prescribing/health and wellbeing service will cease due to cuts in funding and will no longer be available to patients.

You can access alternative advice & support via https://myhealth-devon.nhs.uk.

Below is some useful information on weight loss, healthy eating and community activity groups.

HEALTH COACH TOP TIPS:

Meal Size: Check your plate size for your main meal – do you know you can check if this is correct for you by using your hand? The span of your hand on the plate is the correct size for you for your main meal. (This is relevant whatever body shape/size you are). Plates have got much larger these days we are creatures of filling our plates up and not leaving food.

Plate division:Trying to ensure that half your plate is covered with Fruit/Veg, just under quarter is Starchy Carbs (be aware of too much bread and potatoes), rest of the plate Protein ideally more Fish, Chicken, and the leanest meat you can afford (being aware of high fat/processed meats) can help keep the balance right. Don’t forget about nuts, lentils, and eggs.

Portion sizes: Using your hand is also ‘a handy’ guide to portions

Food diary: Some people are helped by writing a food diary but doing a photo diary can help with you ‘seeing’ what you are actually putting on your plate and the balance of your meals.

Healthy Eating and Drinking Better

Healthy Eating when trying to lose weight

  • Losing weight is not just about eating it’s also about MOVING MORE!
  • Most of us are aware about the 10,000 steps a day but for many this is not achievable in the beginning or ever, so try to be more aware of how much you actually do in the day and try to increase it.
  • This can be by marching on the spot while waiting for the kettle to boil for that cup of tea!
  • If watching the telly try get up in the commercial breaks and walk around your home or your garden if weather allows
  • Put some music on and have ‘a boogie’, active but also fun!
  • Doing Seated Exercises

This all counts!
