Types of Appointments
Pre-Bookable / Advanced Appointment
These are routine appointments, bookable up to 6 weeks in advance with a clinician. Patients can choose the time and date and select the clinician of their choice. The appointments are 10-15 minutes in length and are sufficient to review one medical problem at a time. These appointments are for medication reviews also. These appointments can also be booked online via SystmOne.
We also offer extended hour surgeries - with appointments available between 6:30 and 7:30 pm throughout the week - these appointments are particularly beneficial for workers.
Four-day Access Appointment
These are appointments which can be booked up to 4 days before the appointment time and date for a more urgent medical requirement. These appointments allow patients to book to see a clinician of their choice on a specific day. The appointments are embargoed until the 4 day time limit and cannot be used until the embargo has expired. A number are also available online via SystmOne.
Telephone Appointment – GP only
These appointments are where a GP calls a patient, relative or representative to discuss an aspect of the patients care. These appointments are 5 minutes in length and are at various times of the day with each doctor. These appointments are ideal for: medication queries, reissue of a medical certificate, blood and x-ray results and emergency contraception requests. These appointments are not intended to replace the face-to-face consultations with doctors but we hope that a good proportion of queries and notifications can be completed in a telephone call.
‘On the Day’ Duty Team ‘Urgent/Emergency’ Appointments
These appointments are for more urgent/emergencies only, and initially telephone based. Available primarily where the patient feels that a four-day access appointment would be too long to wait, and may have an impact on the patients ability to function normally. The receptionist will ask for the symptoms of the patient, please do not be offended by being asked, this is required in order to ensure you are referred to the correct clinician and prioritised accordingly. The team consists of our experienced Nurse Prescriber and a GP – guidance is available on many minor illnesses and our Nurse is able to issue prescriptions. You may be offered an appointment with a member of the duty team if the medical emergency warrants. Please note these appointments cannot be booked online. Please be advised that the outcome could be an advice call, a prescription being issued, a face to face appointment with the duty doctor at the surgery or a home visit.
In a number of cases it might be worth considering an appointment with a practice nurse rather than a doctor. Practice nurses are qualified to deal with many conditions and you may be seen more quickly.
From time to time student doctors join the team as part of their training. If you prefer the student not to be in attendance during your consultation, please notify reception.
Named Accountable GP
All our patients are free to see any GP of their choice, but each patient has a named accountable GP on their clinical record, and this is the GP they are registered with. If you are unsure who this is then please ask at reception. This GP has overall responsibility for you care, but you can request an appointment with any doctor that is available.
If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else.
GP Access Evening & Weekend Appointments
We are pleased to announce that we are now working with South Western Ambulance Service so that GP and Nurse appointments are now available for our patients at Tiverton Hospital Urgent Care Centre during the weekday evenings and at weekends.
Appointments (subject to availability) can be accessed ALL registered patients.
